Breakout Session D

Wednesday, April 28
1:30 PM - 3:00 PM

D1: What Does a Healthy and Vital Organization Look Like?

That is the question this work session will be asking. One of the outcomes LSA is tasked to achieve is that “Lutheran social ministry organizations are healthy and vital, engaged in effective service and advocacy”. But how do we know what defines “healthy and vital” and how will we know if we, individually and collectively, are moving in the right direction? Join colleagues from across the country to provide input to the development of the articulation of the many aspects of healthy and vital. This will be a well-moderated, lively session that results in a broad picture of “healthy and vital.”

This session will be facilitated by Dr. Patricia Savage who is the President and CEO of Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries and current President of the LSA board of directors.

D2: How do Issues of Governance, Spiritual Care, Volunteers and Relationships with Congregations Intersect?

From governance to volunteers and spiritual care to relationships with congregations, Augustana has devoted significant resources to ensure that the organization remains true to its history and values but is positioned well for the new world of nonprofits. Whether you are wrestling with organizational growth issues or just focused on re-framing congregational relations, adjusting your spiritual care focus, or exploring new frontiers of volunteers, this session is for you.

Clients/ residents and staff members can be extremely effective advocates. Inspiring and motivating action among clients, staff, board members and other constituents is both an art and science. D4: Here Goes Everybody: Emerging Technology for Your Organization in a Mobile World

How do these new technologies affect access to and management of your electronic documents, staff retention, recruiting, and e-commerce fundraising? From strategic planning to implementation our lively discussion will outline how technologies impact you, your staff, consumers and ultimately your bottom line.

D5: Cultivating New Sources of Money

Values-led organizations are seeking social and financial returns to make a difference and to achieve sustainability. New corporate forms and financing structures are emerging to meet that demand for innovation, blurring the boundaries between for-profits and non-profits. Today, organizations have the opportunity to access a wide variety of contributed and earned income - pre-sales, "slow money," PRIs, MRIs, convertible debt. Join Criterion Ventures and social investors to learn about these new approaches, how to analyze when and whether various types of financing are appropriate, and how to augment your legal structure to take the best advantage of your financing opportunities.
