Dr. Benke has been President of the Atlantic District of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod since 1991. He was a leader in the East Brooklyn Congregations community organization’s Nehemiah Plan, which built over 3,000 single family homes on ravaged inner-city acreage. Following September 11, 2001, Dr. Benke co-founded Lutheran Disaster Response of New York and served as Interim Chief Executive Officer of Lutheran Social Services of Metropolitan New York.
