May 18, 2008 – Valparaiso, IN – Jill Schumann, president and CEO of Lutheran Services in America, received the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Valparaiso University during commencement services May 18, 2008.

In conferring the degree, Valparaiso University President Alan F. Harre said: “You are a model of the servant who uses personal skills for the betterment of others…In conferring upon you the Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa, we offer public tribute to your unique contributions as faithful servant, accomplished administrator, visionary leader, and inspirational volunteer.”

Valparaiso University, located in Valparaiso, Indiana, has a Lutheran heritage and enrolls 4,000 students and offers more than 70 fields of study in five colleges, a graduate division and a law school. It belongs to a small and distinctive group of colleges and universities that consistently earns national recognition for the quality of its academic programs that integrate the best of the liberal arts with professional preparation, combining theory and practice.

“It is truly an honor to receive this recognition from a university that expects its students to make a faith connection to their work and their life and whose students show a will to make the world a different place through their volunteer and service learning activities,” said Schumann.
