    Breaking, President Signs S. 192 Into Law

    Congress Votes to Reauthorize the Older Americans Act, Bipartisan Bill Heads to President’s Desk

    On April 19, President Obama signed S. 192 into law, reauthorizing the Older Americans Act (OAA) through 2018. LSA has strongly supported S. 192 since it was introduced at the beginning of the 114th Congress. The new law, which protects core OAA programs and makes modest changes to the Act, is the culmination of over five years of legislative negotiations, bipartisan compromises, and stakeholder advocacy.

    LSA Network Members Connect in Northwest Indiana

    On April 2, the Institute for Leadership and Service at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, IN, hosted its annual Bridge/Work Conference. This year's theme, "Send Money, Prayers & People" focused on the relationship between belief and action in humanitarian work. The conference also featured several connections in the Lutheran Services in America network.

    Partnerships & the Power of the Network: Coming Together with Ted Goins

    LSA Member Spotlight

    Each day Ted Goins, President and CEO of Lutheran Services Carolinas (LSC), stops at Trinity Oaks, an LSC senior living community, to visit with his 85 year-old parents before continuing on his one mile commute home. A North Carolina native, Ted is the son of a Lutheran pastor and a mother nicknamed, ‘The Reverend Mother.’ When asked about his call to serve, Ted chuckles, “I blame them. They raised me for this kind of work – I have always served others.”

    House Approves Older Americans Act Reauthorization Bill

    On March 21, the US House of Representatives voted to reauthorize the Older Americans Act (OAA). The legislation slightly amends the OAA reauthorization measure (S. 192) adopted by the Senate last July. The two chambers must now reconcile the discrepancies between their bills, which could be achieved by Senate endorsement of the House-passed version. As a result of ongoing bipartisan, bicameral negotiations, the Senate appears poised to do so as early as next month. LSA applauds the House...

    Bridge of Hope partners with congregations and ministry organizations to help homeless mothers

    For Lutheran Services Carolinas, a member of the LSA network, working to help people in their community live independent, meaningful lives are key to their mission. When LSC partnered with Bridge of Hope, they found a partner to work with to bring together single mothers in need of support, professional support and volunteer mentors from the local church community.
