LSA President and CEO Honored at Capitol Hill Reception

Jill Schumann, LSA President and CEONovember, 2011 (Baltimore, MD) - More than 150 people gathered in the historic Kennedy Caucus Room on Capitol Hill on October 27 to celebrate the work of Jill Schumann, the outgoing President and CEO of Lutheran Services in America (LSA). Guests, many of whom were in Washington to participate in an LSA event at the White House the following day, came from near and far to honor Schumann.

The special guest at the program was Joshua DuBois, Special Advisor to President Obama and Director of the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships. Mr. DuBois spoke eloquently and personally about Schumann, highlighting the positive relationship the Obama Administration has had with her and with LSA. Ms. Schumann is among 25 nonprofit, business, entertainment and foundation leaders serving on the White House Council for Community Solutions. Schumann previously served an advisory role with the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, whose generous sponsorship made the reception possible, also made a presentation, donating $5,000 to a charity of Schumann’s choice. Greetings to those assembled were offered by Rev. Richard Graham, bishop of the Metropolitan Washington DC Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and the Rev. Bart Day, Director of Life Together for the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. LSA’s Board Chairperson, Ted Goins, Jr., President and CEO of Lutheran Services for the Aging, emceed the evening.

Lutheran Services in America creates opportunities with people in thousands of communities throughout the United States and the Caribbean through more than 300 health and human service organizations connected to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and/or The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod. Working neighbor to neighbor through services in health care, aging and disability supports, community development, housing, and child and family strengthening, these organizations together touch the lives of more than six million people or one in 50 Americans each year.
