Lutheran Services in America Voices Continued Opposition to the American Health Care Act

Converting Medicaid to Per Capita Caps Puts our Nation's Most Vulnerable People at Risk -- Denying Coverage for People with Pre-Existing Conditions would be Devastating for those with Chronic Diseases and Disabilities

WASHINGTON - Lutheran Services in America President and CEO Charlotte Haberaecker issued the following statement on the American Health Care Act:

“The latest version of the American Health Care Act will jeopardize the health care and long term services and supports of millions of Americans by fundamentally restructuring Medicaidi n the form of per capita caps, decreasing federal spending on Medicaid and reducing overall levels of health care coverage.
“Two-thirds of seniors in nursing homes, 39 percent of American children and over ten million people with disabilities rely on Medicaid. Converting Medicaid to a per capita cap program will put our nation’s most vulnerable people at risk.

"Furthermore, we oppose the bill's new provisions that eliminate protections for people with pre-existing conditions. These provisions would be devastating to people with chronic diseases and disabilities.

“We urge members of the House of Representatives to reject the American Health Care Act.”
