Lutheran Services in America (LSA) unites a remarkable stream of grace. For nearly two centuries Lutheran individuals and congregations have responded in gratitude and love to the needs of their neighbors. Founding orphanages after the civil war, building homes for the aged when family care was no longer sufficient, opening shelters and kitchens, resettling refugees, creating communities to empower persons with disabilities, working for justice, only begins the list.
Each year more than 300 independent Lutheran health and human service organizations in 3,000 communities all across the country and the Caribbean that make up LSA. This is a dynamic scenario in which new ministries and organizations form and others evolve, merge or revise their missions. Last year services were provided to nearly 6 million people - or one in 50 Americans. The size and scope of Lutheran social ministry is substantial and bespeaks a lively faith.
But, one of the most exciting aspects of Lutheran social ministry is that it is an inclusive not an exclusive story. Most of the people served by and working in Lutheran organizations come from beyond the Lutheran community. A wide range of volunteers, donors and partners in service join with Lutheran organizations to make a difference. And we invite you to make connections, too.
