LSA's Member Engagement Team on the Road this Fall

Wednesday, October 22, 2014

MinnesotaShannon Steene of LSA's Member Engagement team has been on the road lately, visiting members of Lutheran Services in America. Did you know that LSA's network is made up of more than 300 organizations, which provide care to six million people a year? Thank you to all the hard-working people that provide care and hope to people in need throughout the U.S.

Some highlights of Shannon's recent travels:

In September, Shannon visited our member Lyngblomsten in Minnesota. He said, "Great service to seniors continues in spite of the start of a construction project at Lyngblomsten. My visit coincided with the first day that the main entrance was closed off. It was a pleasant surprise to hear laughter and energetic chatter as people adjusted to the temporary changes."

"Our residents and staff are excited to think of the end result, and this just gives us a chance to use our space in a different way," says President & CEO Jeff Heinecke.

Northfield Retirement Community

In October, Shannon visited member Northfield Retirement Community in Minnesota. Says Shannon, "I had the pleasure of meeting Kyle Nordine, CEO of Northfield Retirement Community. This is the third LSA member organization he has headed up during his career, and we're lucky to have him in our network. A nice thing to know too is that the original administrator from 45 years ago, Gerhard Nygaard, is now a resident at the campus."

Lutheran Services Iowa

Shannon also visited Lutheran Services Iowa (LSI) this fall and commented, "LSI's front doors have welcomed a lot of people over the years and were being repaired on the day I visited so that they could welcome even more people  in the future." In fact, LSI is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year – that's certainly a lot of people welcome and cared for over the years! Congratulations to them and happy anniversary.

Fairview Health Services
Shannon also recently met with B.J. Larson of our member Fairview Health Service, an award-winning nonprofit health care system based in Minneapolis. BJ welcomed Shannon to the Twin Cities area to talk about some of the big issues affecting them. As with many of LSA’s members providing healthcare, major changes are underway, creating challenges and opportunities.

Fairview provides coordinated health care—from preventing illness and injury to caring for the most complex medical conditions and is an academic health system in partnership with the University of Minnesota, committed to research and education. Fairview has a more than 100-year history of meeting community needs and achieving breakthrough medical advances in care!

Themes for the conversation included the link between faith and health, as well as community-based housing and how it relates to healthcare.

St. John's Lutheran Home
Shannon also had the chance to meet with Scot Spates of St. John’s Lutheran Home in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Scott paints a compelling vision for their new waterfront campus to be built on Fountain Lake. With a continuum of housing and services for seniors, it is hard not to love the vision!
