Lutheran Services in America Recognizes Senator Casey for his Outstanding Support of the Disability Community [1]

Thursday, October 8, 2015

Senator Casey and Self AdvocatesOn October 7, Lutheran Services in America Disability Network (LSA-DN) presented Senator Robert Casey, Jr. (D-PA) with a plaque in recognition of his work on behalf of the disability community and his efforts to pass the historic ABLE legislation, an important step to providing more financial independence for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

As part of the LSA-DN "Speak Up!" self-advocacy training summit, held in Washington, D.C. Oct 6-7, 20 delegates from the summit – representing self-advocates, their family members, ID/D professionals and members from the Lutheran social ministry community – gathered at Senator Casey's office for the presentation. Bill Nolan, executive director of KenCrest, a member of LSA and LSA-DN, presented the plaque and thanked the Senator.

"I think our country is a nation that believes that people with disabilities have a lot of ability, and a lot of ways to contribute. Sometimes we don’t give them the tools to be able to grow and learn and thrive and make the contributions that we know people with disabilities can make. The ABLE act was a recognition of that, and it was a wonderful experience to be part of that. Don’t underestimate the power that you have by representing a state, and by representing a community … don’t stop what you’re doing. If you’re doing advocacy, don’t stop," said Senator Casey.
